Literacy & Language
For each student, we dedicate this time to direct, language based instruction and targeted study skills.
Because our students struggle with aspects of language, Literacy & Language form the core of our academic program and is an essential element that sets The Southport School apart from other schools teaching students with language based learning differences like dyslexia, executive function, and attention issues. All students receive over 90 minutes of intense, systematic, and diagnostic-prescriptive instruction each day, depending on their specific learning needs.
In groups of two to five students with similar learning profiles, teachers focus on:
- Utilizing the Orton-Gillingham approach for reading instruction -- the Orton-Gillingham Academy accredits TSS, and all classroom teachers are professionally trained and certified
- Advancing thinking through writing while developing written expression skills using The Writing Revolution, a methodology of carefully sequenced instruction that builds from sentences to compositions.
- Developing vocabulary and comprehension skills at the word, sentence, and passage level, using Lindamood-Bell’s Visualizing and Verbalizing Method®
- Providing direct instruction and daily reinforcement in The Southport School's proprietary research and evidence based executive function coaching model, which helps students to become independent learners
- Increasing students’ literacy and language abilities so that they can transition to grade-appropriate situations with little or no support services
